Just wanting to find out how those of you with cats clean out the litter box.
Not really "how", as much as how do you keep it from getting messy.
I've been taking care of it using latex gloves. I scoop out the clumps & put them in a double set of plastic bags then take them out to the trash. The only problem is, no matter how careful I try to be, my Dad complains that I get tiny bits of kitty litter on the floor.
Someone suggested putting down newspaper or cardboard to catch the bits that get dropped.
I just wanted to know if there's any new-fangled tech I can use, or if you all think these suggestions are good enough.

I can see some and used to use the scoop, but now I just use poop bags like I do for my dog. I keep the litter box in the bathroom so its easier to sweep up.

Thanks.
Yeah, it's dry, like I said, it's not even excrement, it's just bits of litter.

I would put something under the litter box so that the dry litter is easier to clean, and just vacuum it up at least once a day. I know there are really fancy litter boxes that clean themselves automatically after the cat goes. Nice theory, but they are expensive, and sometimes they start the cleaning process too soon, and it scares the cat. So, I wouldn't go that route.

agree with posts 2 and 5. I use a handheld vac for this task.

I was wondering about the self-cleaners myself, so thanks for that info Alicia. What I do at the moment is scoop into a litter locker. Jamila's litter tray is in the bathroom, on a stone floor, so easy to clean up if I spill. For cleaning thoroughly I put the tray into a garbage bag, scoop the litter into the bag, then wash the tray. Refill and we're done. Strangely, as soon as I clean the tray she uses it, and I mean like straight after. Odd cat. hth, Anyway.

Walk in beauty,
Simon

Yep, Simon, my cats used to do that, too. As soon as I'd completely empty and wash the litter pan, then refill it, they would use it immediately. Sometimes Shadow would roll around in the clean litter before he used it the first time. Never understood that one. The only thing I could think is that he wanted to get his own scent on the litter before using it.

Sell your cat, give it away, pay someone to take it off your hands.

Sorry, yours is a sincere question, but I have to maintain my stature as a cat hater. So, sue me.

I have one of the self-cleaning litter boxes, and I like it a lot. I've had it for almost a year now, and haven't had any problems. It really helps keep the litter box clean, and the odors at bay. I still have to vacuum around it because when the cats come out, they still have a little bit of litter on their paws, but that's okay. Vacuuming is something you're going to have to do no matter what. If you don't want to go with a self-cleaning one, then the suggestion of putting some kind of tray or box under the litter box is a good one.
